Two materials
Oak or Luxury Vinyl Herringbone
We offer herringbone in two materials. Both look beautiful, and the right one usually depends on the room.
Oak Herringbone Flooring
Oak herringbone is real timber, available in engineered or solid oak. Engineered oak is the better choice for kitchens and rooms with underfloor heating, while solid oak can be sanded many times over and suits period homes. For restoration projects, we can also source reclaimed parquet blocks.
Herringbone Vinyl Flooring
Herringbone LVT (luxury vinyl tiles) gives you the look of wood without the worry about water. It is warm underfoot, quiet and easy to clean, so it is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family homes. We supply herringbone LVT from Amtico, Karndean and Moduleo.

Our showroom
Amtico Herringbone and Oak Herringbone in Our Showroom
As the Amtico One Exclusive Retail Partner for Sevenoaks and surrounding areas, we can supply Amtico's herringbone and parquet laying patterns, including designs from the Spacia collection. In the showroom, you can use the Amtico visualiser to try different wood effects, block sizes and borders before you decide.
Our oak herringbone comes from Ted Todd, V4 and Panaget, in finishes from pale and brushed to smoked and dark. You are welcome to borrow samples to see at home.
Patterns
Herringbone, Chevron and Parquet Patterns
Herringbone
Herringbone blocks have square ends and are laid in a staggered zigzag. Double herringbone uses the blocks in pairs for a bolder look.
Chevron
Chevron flooring uses blocks cut at an angle, so their ends meet in a clean point and form a continuous V. Chevron has a slightly more contemporary feel and suits long hallways well.
Parquet and Borders
Parquet is the name for any wood blocks laid in a pattern. As well as herringbone and chevron, we can add a border around your floor or use one to mark out an area within an open-plan room.
Our process
How We Fit Your Herringbone Floor
Every herringbone floor follows the same three steps, from the first visit to the finished pattern.
Step 1
Your Free Home Measure
Herringbone depends on careful planning, so the home measure matters even more than usual. We will measure each room with laser equipment, check that the subfloor is level and dry, and work out where the pattern should start.
If you are still deciding between oak and LVT, we can quote for both. That way you can compare them on real figures for your home.
Step 2
Preparing the Subfloor
A herringbone floor needs a flat, sound base, so our fitters always start with the subfloor. Depending on what we find, this may mean laying a damp-proof membrane, levelling the surface or fitting new plywood boards.
Step 3
How Our Herringbone Flooring Fitters Work
Next comes the setting out. We mark a centre line and plan the pattern around doorways, fireplaces and kitchen islands, so it looks straight where your eye falls first. Oak blocks are then glued down, and LVT is fixed with the manufacturer's recommended adhesive. Every block around the edge of the room is cut by hand.
When the floor is finished, we fit the thresholds and trims, take away the waste and leave the room clean and tidy.

Where it works best
Herringbone in Hallways and Kitchens
Hallways
The hallway is the most popular place for herringbone. Laid across a narrow hall, the pattern makes the space feel wider, and a hard-wearing finish copes well with muddy shoes.
Kitchens
In the kitchen, engineered oak herringbone works well in most homes. If your kitchen opens onto the garden or sees a lot of water, herringbone LVT is the more practical choice. Many of our customers use both, with oak in the living spaces and matching LVT in the kitchen, and we make sure the two floors meet neatly.
Pricing
What Affects the Cost of Herringbone Flooring
Herringbone usually costs more than plank flooring, because the blocks are smaller and the pattern takes longer to fit. The material makes the biggest difference, whether you choose solid oak, engineered oak or LVT. Chevron and borders add to the cost too.
The rest depends on your home, such as how much work the subfloor needs and how many doorways and corners there are. That is why we give you a fixed quotation after measuring, rather than a price per square metre.
