Five natural fibres
Choosing Your Natural Fibre
Each natural fibre has its own character, and the right one depends on where it is going.
Sisal
Sisal is made from the leaves of the agave plant. It is the toughest natural fibre, with a crisp, tailored weave, and it is ideal for hallways, stairs and landings.
Seagrass
Seagrass has a smooth, slightly waxy surface that resists stains well. It is one of the more affordable natural fibres and works well in living rooms and studies.
Jute
Jute is the softest plant fibre, with a warm, chunky look. It is best suited to bedrooms and quieter rooms.
Coir
Coir is made from coconut husk. It is coarse, rustic and very hard-wearing, which makes it a good choice for porches and boot rooms.
Wool Sisal and Wool Weaves
If you love the natural look but want something softer underfoot, a wool weave gives you both. Wool weaves are a popular choice for bedrooms and stairs.

Our most popular fibre
Sisal Carpet
Sisal is the most popular natural fibre carpet in the UK. It also comes in more weaves than any other fibre, from fine bouclé and herringbone designs to chunky basketweave.
Sisal is firm underfoot, so most of our customers choose it for halls, stairs and living rooms rather than bedrooms. Like all plant fibres, it will mark if a spill is left to soak in. For a family home, ask us about a stain-protection treatment when you choose your carpet.
Things to know
Sisal Carpet Pros and Cons
Natural fibres are hard-wearing, plant-based and full of character. They give a room a calm, considered feel that is hard to achieve with an ordinary carpet.
The main thing to bear in mind is moisture. Plant fibres are not suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or conservatories that get hot and humid, and spills need blotting straight away. If you love the look but need something fully washable, we also stock man-made carpets that look and feel like sisal, jute and seagrass.
| Fibre | Hard-wearing | Feel underfoot | Stain resistance | Best rooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sisal | Very high | Firm | Moderate (treatment available) | Halls, stairs, landings, living rooms |
| Seagrass | High | Smooth and firm | High | Living rooms, studies, playrooms |
| Jute | Moderate | Soft | Low | Bedrooms, dressing rooms |
| Coir | Very high | Coarse | Moderate | Porches, boot rooms |
| Wool weaves | High | Soft | Good | Bedrooms, stairs, living rooms |
Stairs and landings
Natural Fibre Stair Carpets and Runners
Stairs are one of the most popular places for natural flooring. Sisal and wool weaves give a crisp finish and good grip underfoot. Seagrass is smoother, so for stairs we usually suggest sisal or wool instead.
You can have your stairs carpeted wall to wall, or choose a runner with painted or wooden treads showing at either side. A sisal runner held in place with stair rods is a classic look in Victorian and Edwardian homes. We make every runner to measure and fit it on your stairs and landing.
Fitting
How We Fit Natural Fibre Carpets
Natural fibre carpets are fitted differently from ordinary carpets. Instead of being stretched over gripper rods, they are stuck down, either straight onto the subfloor or onto an underlay made for the purpose.
Before fitting, the carpet needs time to settle into your home, and the subfloor must be flat and dry. We check this at your free home measure and include any preparation in your fixed quotation. Once your carpet is down, we will show you how to look after it, including what to do about spills.
